 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my church;
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church is comprised of congregants who believe that the Bible offers complete instruction for living life to its fullest and with the purpose of sharing the good news of Jesus’ love and his grace. The church, established more than a century ago in 1901, is an East St. Louis institution that is a cornerstone of the community. While God’s word and his promises don’t change, the church has evolved in order to meet the ever changing needs of its parishioners and the community.

The church worships with psalms and praises and its ministries are varied in order to offer each individual a place in which he or she can worship and serve the Kingdom of God. Mt. Zion emphasizes learning and training to live out the pastor’s vision for the church to be “an effective, liberating, biblical and educational institution.” The church offers Sunday School, and bible trainings that include offerings through the local New Salem District Association as well as the state and National Baptist Convention, USA.

Its outreach services uplift those who have found themselves counted among the least, the last and lost. Some of these ministries include feeding the hungry through weekly meals, food basket distributions and a prison outreach ministry. For the youth, the church offers academic tutoring, the Awana youth club and a praise and mime ministry. Seniors who live throughout the community can be involved in and are served through the year-round senior citizens’ ministry.

Mt. Zion Mission East Baptist Church offers worshipers a smaller church experience. Mission East was established in 1986 as training ground for developing associate ministers from the “mother” church. The Mission East pastor is assigned by the pastor (Bishop) of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Today, the congregation has grown well past the original 20 “seed” members and officers who were assigned or volunteered to support the church in its infancy.
